| If
you joined us recently for our 20th annual Scholar Athlete
Banquet at the Orlando Marriott, we hope you enjoyed the evening.
It spotlighted another group of outstanding young Central
Florida high school seniors who combine academics and athletics
into an amazing set of accomplishments. Selected from more
than 90 nominees, these 20 final
ists
are truly the crème of this year's graduating class,
and represent the top echelon of high school students. |

Keynote
Speaker,
Jeff Turner |
Jeff
Turner, former NBA and Magic player, sportscaster, Olympic gold
medalist and soon-to-be basketball coach at Lake Highland Prep was
our keynote speaker, stepping in on short notice for John Weisbrod,
who was called out of town suddenly on team business. We thank Jeff
for making room for us in his busy schedule and for his motivating
talk on the importance of always working toward your goals.
The top honors of the evening - the Male and Female Scholar Athlete
of the Year awards - were presented to Kevin Harris of Seminole
High and Jennifer Barringer of Oviedo High. The Male award was presented
this year in honor of Bill Buchalter, Orlando Sentinel's high school
sports guru and a long-time supporter of the DACO and our Scholar
Athlete program. The Female award was again presented in honor or
Mrs. Jimmie Carse.
The same week, Board member Rick Morris presented the DACO Foundation
twenty-fifth full-tuition four-year college scholarship to Jarian
Smith, a graduating senior at Jones High School at the Jones High
Senior Awards night. Jarian has been very active in a number of
academic and civic youth leadership organizations over the past
four years, while earning a 3.0 GPA. He played on the Jones football
team for two years before being sidelined with a heart murmur. Jarian
plans to attend Valencia Community College in the fall, then transfer
to a major state university to earn an Education degree and pursue
his dream to teach math on the high school level. |
